R4 Style is a lived-experience framework for understanding what can happen when life changes direction and the life we knew no longer fits in quite the same way.
I created R4 Style after recognizing patterns across very different chapters of my own life. Illness, HIV/AIDS, addiction and recovery, disability, grief, aging, retirement, and other changes did not happen as one continuous story, but each required some form of recognition, adaptation, movement, and rebuilding.
Eventually, two ideas came together.
The first was The Crossing: the curb as recognition, the crosswalk as uncertainty and movement, and the other side of the street as rebuilding and meaning.
The second was the Four R’s: Rock Bottom, Recovery, Resilience, and Reinvention.
Together, they became R4 Style.
The framework does not tell anyone how change should happen. It does not assume every hardship has a purpose or that every difficult experience must become a lesson. It does not ask people to fit their lives into my story.
Instead, it offers language.
Where am I standing? What has changed? What needs care? Where am I already demonstrating resilience? What might I be ready to create differently?
My experiences gave me one way of seeing those questions. Other people bring entirely different stories.
That is what gives the framework meaning beyond me.
