Behind the R4Style.com Hero

The image on the homepage isn't just a photograph. It's a reflection of the journey that inspired everything you'll find on this website.

The person standing at the curb is me, looking toward the crosswalk that leads to the riverfront. That simple walk became one of the most meaningful metaphors of my life.

Years ago, while living and working in Manhattan, I was diagnosed HIV-positive. That diagnosis marked the beginning of a crossing I never expected to make. Over the years that followed came recovery, illness, disability, grief, retirement, and countless moments that required me to choose whether to remain where I was or take another step forward.

Looking back, I realized that every significant change in my life began the same way—with a crossing.

The curb represents the moment we recognize that life has changed. The crosswalk represents the uncertainty of moving forward. The other side of the street represents the possibility of rebuilding a life that may look different from the one we planned, but can still be deeply meaningful.

That realization became the foundation of R4 Style.

The homepage image is more than a design element. It's a reminder that change begins with a single step, even when we can't see exactly where the journey will lead.

Every time I look at that photograph, I'm reminded of a simple truth that continues to guide my life:

When life changes direction, the crossing begins.

And because of that, I believe something else just as deeply:

You weren't meant to stay at the curb.
